Abstract When the parameter estimation of Damped Exponentials (DE) based scattering center model is considered in real life situation, the noise is always non-Gaussian and has long-tailed distribution. The estimation error in such noise may be large if the estimator under gauss-noise assumption is used. In this paper, the M-estimation method is used to obtain robust parameter estimation of DE-model in long-tailed clutter. Firstly, the shortcoming of Prony-based M-estimation method is analyzed. Then, other two effective methods to realize M-estimation of DE-model are proposed. A comparative study of these two methods is carried on about their estimation performance. Lastly, Monte-Carlo simulation test is performed to validate the proposed methods. The results show that the two proposed methods both give better estimation results in long-tailed K-Distribution clutter.
