Abstract The method of measuring deep soil moisture by VHF/UHF dual frequency multiple polarization Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) consisting of vector network analyzer is proposed. The backscattering mechanism of vegetation and soil at depth, dielectric properties of soil are presented. The simulation results of the backscattering of multilayered soil, dielectric properties of soil are given and the models are validated by special case of single layered soil.
