Abstract In this paper, the basic factors of the techniques combining the polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with interferometric SAR are considered firstly, and then the basic concepts of coherence optimization and target decomposition of polarimetric SAR interferometry are illustrated. The current status of polarimetric SAR interferometry technique, the developments of typical spaceborne polarimetric SAR systems and the applications of polarimetric SAR interferometry are summarized.
