Abstract The shift-variant property of discrete wavelet transform makes wavelet-domain motion estimation inaccurate. In order to overcome the shift-variant property, a 2-channel high-pass filtering method and a wavelet-domain motion estimation algorithm are presented. The experiment results demonstrate validity of the new method, and indicate the new wavelet-domain motion estimation has comparable performance and low calculated complexity. Therefore, this is likely appealing for the wavelet video coding applications.
