Abstract A syndrome-based type-I Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) is proposed, where Reed-Solomon code is selected to be the FEC subsystem and the error-detection function is embedded ably in the decoding process. Analytical and simulation results of Bit Error Rate (BER) and throughput efficiency of the system show that syndrome-ahead and syndrome-behind structures are suited to short codes and long codes, respectively. By choosing the maximum of retransmission times, a perfect tradeoff can be obtained between the throughput efficiency and the reliability of the system.
