Abstract According to the characteristic that Forward Looking Ground Penetrating Radar (FLGPR) wave incidents aslant and propagates through two layer medium of the air and the ground, the Frequency-Wavenumber (F-W) Synthetic Aperture Imaging (SAI) method of FLGPR is proposed based on equivalent wavefield and hologram imaging. The proposed method images the recorded section above the ground by F-W SAI based on the hologram imaging method. Then, the recorded section underground is SAI with the equivalent wave field in the swath on the ground surface. The proposed method reduces the SAI in two layers to SAI in every layer respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective.
