Abstract OFDM has received a considerable attention for realization of high-speed power line communications. Impulse, one of the main disturbances in power line, is a type of bursty, high amplitude, and low probability noise. Such impulses with very short duration will contain spectral components on all subchannels, and thus impact the decision of symbols transmitted on all subcarriers. This paper analyzes the performance of selected impulse noise detectors. The receiver detects impulse emergence and its position within an OFDM symbol by amplitude calculation combined in time and frequency domain. Samples corrupted by impulse noise are reconstructed using redundancy of the guard band in the frequency domain. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a good performance for low signal-to-noise ratios, if the proper threshold is selected.
