Abstract Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) plays a very important role in ocean remote sensing. Current movement and ocean wave transmission are crucial constituent part of ocean dynamic information. However, regular SAR ocean image processing treats SAR image as transient state, and can not get dynamic information. This paper gets several sequent time interval images from one image using sub-aperture division method. An optimized phase correlation method is proposed to match the corresponding parts of sequence SAR images. According to the movement quantity and direction, the ocean waves movement tendency can be got. Experimental results show that the optimized method presents 1/10 resolution accuracy and noise robustness. For the same ships in sequence images, the proposed matching method and the “ship wake” method are used to calculate the ship speed. Two results are very close to each other, which proves the proposed method is effective.
