Abstract In order to process the multi-channel received data coherently in a convenient way, this paper simplifies MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar signal model using phase center approximation, firstly. The multiple-transmit multiple-receive array architecture of MIMO radar is transformed into monostatic situation at the cost of causing displaced phase center error. Through the geometry of phase center approximation, definition of displaced phase center error is obtained. Displaced phase center error is analyzed in depth and some basic properties related to error correction are derived. Error correction expression of displaced phase center is designed according to the extent of space between receive and transmit phase center. Finally, the numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis in this paper.
