An On-line Handwritten Arithmetic Expression Recognition System

Abstract In this paper a complete on-line handwritten arithmetic expression recognition system is introduced. During the process of stroke grouping and symbol recognition, pre-processing strategy and searching procedure are combined to optimize the confidence function. A novel structural analysis algorithm based on symbol ranking is described, and recognition results are stored in trinary trees as the data structure. Experiments show that relatively neatly written expressions with fairly complex structures can be analysed by this algorithm with a high correction rate.
