Abstract A novel improved initial ranging algorithm in frequency domain is proposed for the uplink OFDMA system based on IEEE 802.16e. The initial ranging progress in frequency domain is completed by correlating the receiving signal with ranging codes in the frequency domain and detecting the used ranging code and timing offset of different users according to the power of ranging signal. Combined with serial interference cancellation, the proposed algorithm increases the correct detection probability of the system and decreases the false alarm rate when multi-users are accessing to the system simultaneously. The performance of the proposed algorithm and algorithms both in time and frequency domain is compared by simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the original time and frequency domain algorithms both in performance and calculation complexity.
