Abstract The high dynamic topology change is the main reason to cause the frequent breakages of routes of traditional on-demand routing protocols in mobile Ad hoc networks. Therefore it is significant to extend the traditional on-demand routing protocol by the link stability prediction which will improve route stability. Based on the received signal strength, the relative motions of neighbor nodes are classified into two categories: separate and near. Then in each category, the link mean duration which is used to predict the link stability is calculated on the basis of the distance between two neighbor nodes. In routing process, mid-nodes forward the received RREQ packets after a delay which is decided by the link mean duration predicted, and then with the forward rule which is proposed, a stable route can be found. Simulation results show that this extended traditional on-demand routing protocol can improve the route stability and the network performance.
