Abstract In this paper, the optimization of cooperative spectrum sensing mechanisms in cognitive radio networks is investigated to improve the sensing efficiency and spectrum utilization. The optimization algorithms and strategies of detection period, detection time and searching time are proposed respectively for channel monitoring and channel searching scenarios. Analysis and simulations show that exploitation of cooperative sensing and proactive sensing can improve the sensing performance and transmitting rate. The proposed sensing mechanisms can increase the system throughput, reduce the sensing latency, and thus enhance the sensing efficacy and agility significantly under the interference constrains of primary signal.
