Abstract This paper reports on current developments in the area of very low bit-rate video coding, including algorithms and standardization. The advances are summarized in several areas, among them motion compensation/transformation (MC/T)techniques, model-based video coding, fractal IFS coding, H.263 and MPEG4. The future developments are discussed.
