Abstract Unequally spaced arrays are characterized by high side lobes. To reduce the side lobes, traditional genetic algorithm is modified to optimize the position of elements in the array. Due to the high flexibility of genetic algorithm, the results obtained for a 25-element array over an aperture of 50λ are better than those reported in the literatures
