Abstract In this paper, a new approach to bi-static SAR range resolution in ground plane, based on special gradient of transit time, is developed. This new approach has more adaptability. The physical meaning of special gradient is analyzed and its temporal changing property is also researched. Detailed simulations test the validity of the approach and some methods for Bi-SAR trajectory planning, dynamically optimized based on range resolution, are provided at the end of the paper.
