Abstract In this paper, an automatic algorithm of image enhancement based on fuzzy sets is proposed by defining a new membership function. This algorithm is performed through extracting the fuzzy property plane from the spatial domain firstly, executing the fuzzy enhancement, and obtaining the modified spatial domain image finally. In order to get much better quality of the image the contrast among the regions is increased using the fuzzy enhancement. This algorithm is also extended to the enhancement of the multi-threshold image.
