Abstract In this paper, a joint source channel coding scheme used to transmit progressive image bit stream over noisy channel is proposed. The method can dynamically adjust the rates between source coding and channel coding, thus yields good performance and high efficiency. It still has the advantages of simplicity in system structure and ease in realization. Simulation results show that this scheme can highly improve the image quality compared to EEP and UEP scheme proposed previously especially when the channel is in bad condition.
