Abstract For resource allocation in IP over WDM networks, this paper proposes a novel routing and wavelength assignment algorithm based on layered-graph. The algorithm will open new wavelength paths if the arriving requests cannot be set-up over the existing IP-level topology effectively. As the developed integrated dynamic resource allocation policy combines the characteristics of the IP layer and optical layer, the algorithm naturally has a bettor network usage than those traditional ways taking into account the two layers separately. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the hops of the lightpaths and the network blocking probability.
