Abstract Three-channel adaptive biorthogonal filterbanks via lifting scheme aro investi-gated. Using the subband coding gain as the criterion in design, starting from an arbitrary filterbank (orthonormal or biorthogonal), three-channel biorthogonal filterbanks arc designed by the sequential adaptive lifting scheme. Finally, experimental results show that the sub-band coding gains can be improved when an appropriate initial filterbank is chosen.
