Abstract A new type cumulant-based virtual DOA matrix is formed using the property of aperture extension of fourth-order cumulants. The azimuth and elevation of the incident sources can be estimated simultaneity from the amplitude and phase information of non-zero eigenvalue of the new matrix respectively. With arbitrary geometry of the array, this method can extend actual array aperture efficiently. By properly laying out the array, this algorithm can suppress arbitrary distributed background noise and better estimation of DOA can be obtained.
